Mikel Obi Snubs NFF Roles, Blasts “Clueless” Football Administrators

Ex-Super Eagles captain says he rejected repeated offers to return, insists Nigerian football cannot progress under current leadership

Former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend, John Obi Mikel, has revealed he turned down several invitations from Nigerian football authorities to take up roles within the system, citing deep dissatisfaction with the country’s football leadership.

Speaking during a candid appearance on a podcast hosted by former England striker Peter Crouch, Mikel did not hold back in his criticism of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), accusing long-serving officials of lacking the expertise and vision required to move the game forward.

According to him, entrenched interests and a reluctance to relinquish power have continued to stall meaningful progress in Nigerian football.

“We don’t have people who truly understand football,” Mikel said. “They remain in office year after year, controlling everything, unwilling to step aside because of the power and financial benefits attached.”

The former midfield star disclosed that despite receiving multiple calls to return and contribute to Nigerian football, he has consistently declined due to irreconcilable differences with current administrators.

“I’ve been approached several times to come back and get involved, but I refused,” he said. “Those individuals need to go. I cannot work with people who do not share the same vision or objectives.”

Mikel stressed that Nigeria possesses the resources and talent to significantly improve its football standards but warned that progress will remain limited without proper management and accountability.

“The aim should be to raise the standard of football in Nigeria, and that is achievable,” he added. “But resources must be directed to the right places.”

He further criticised the prolonged tenure of some officials, alleging that funds meant for development are not effectively utilised, while the game continues to stagnate.

Mikel’s remarks come at a time of renewed scrutiny of football governance in Nigeria, fueling calls for reforms and fresh leadership capable of repositioning both the Super Eagles and domestic football structures for sustained success.
