NCDC Raises Possibility of 2027 Election Postponement if Ebola Outbreak Worsens

NCDC Director-General Jide Idris says postponing the 2027 general election is not currently necessary but could be considered if the Ebola outbreak spreads widely across Nigeria.

Nigeria’s health authorities have raised the possibility that the 2027 general election could be postponed if the Ebola outbreak in the country becomes widespread, although officials insist there is currently no reason to consider such a move.

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Jide Idris, said the government would prioritise public health if the outbreak escalated to a level that could pose a significant threat to Nigerians.

Idris made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed concerns about the potential impact of the Ebola outbreak on the country’s political calendar.

He stressed that the health sector had no intention of using disease outbreaks for political purposes, adding that any decision concerning the election would depend on the severity of the public health situation.

“We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered. As of now, there is no need for that,” Idris said.

He also rejected suggestions that the outbreak could be used as a political weapon, maintaining that disease control efforts should remain focused on protecting lives rather than advancing political interests.

“This Ebola thing started in the DRC a couple of months ago, and we were tracking it. They said, for you to track again, there is a possibility that it may get here due to our population movement, flights into this country, and ports of entry. Yet it came. No government will use Ebola as a political weapon,” he added.

Ebola Outbreak Raises Public Health Concerns Ahead of 2027

The comments come as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general election, with political activities and preparations by aspirants seeking elective offices already gaining momentum.

The possibility of a postponement is likely to attract public attention because of the importance of the election to Nigeria’s democratic process and the extensive preparations required to conduct nationwide polls.

However, Idris made it clear that postponement is not currently being proposed as a necessary measure. Rather, it remains a possibility that could be considered if the outbreak becomes sufficiently severe.

The NCDC chief also explained that Nigeria had been monitoring developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the outbreak was reported, while assessing the risk of the virus reaching the country through international travel and other forms of population movement.

He pointed to air travel and the movement of people through the country’s ports of entry as factors that could increase the risk of imported infections.

No Decision Announced on Election Timetable

Despite the warning, Idris did not announce any decision to postpone the 2027 general election. His remarks were conditional, stressing that such a step might only be considered if the outbreak expanded significantly.

Any change to the election timetable would require an official decision from the relevant authorities. For now, the NCDC’s position, as reflected in Idris’s comments, is that there is no current public health justification for postponement.

The situation underscores the challenge of balancing public health protection with democratic responsibilities should an infectious disease outbreak escalate during a major national event.
