12 Killed, Over 300 Injured in Houthi Attack on Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Airport

Saudi authorities say the attack targeted a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport, with victims from several countries. The Saudi-led coalition has vowed a decisive response.

At least 12 people have been killed and 309 others injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to the country’s General Authority of Civil Aviation.

The reported attack on Saturday targeted a passenger terminal at the airport, raising fresh concerns over civilian safety and the risk of further escalation in the conflict involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led coalition.

In a statement, the Saudi aviation authority confirmed that the dead included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

The authority said 309 people were wounded, with some sustaining critical injuries. The injured were taken to several hospitals for medical treatment.

Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition forces, blamed Yemen’s Houthi rebels for the attack, saying the airport’s passenger terminal was the intended target.

Al-Maliki warned that the coalition would respond decisively, signalling the possibility of further military action following the incident.

The reported assault has heightened concerns over the safety of civilian infrastructure, particularly airports, which serve as critical gateways for international travel, trade and humanitarian operations.

The incident also threatens to deepen tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which has been involved in a prolonged conflict with the Saudi-led coalition.

However, further details about the circumstances of the attack, the weapons allegedly used and the extent of the damage were not provided in the statement cited.

The reported death toll and injuries underscore the potential human cost of attacks on civilian facilities, particularly in densely populated areas and major transport hubs.

As authorities respond to the aftermath, attention is expected to focus on the security of the airport, assistance for the wounded and the Saudi-led coalition’s promised response.
